What Should I Do After a Car Accident in Texas?

The first hours and days after a crash can affect both your recovery and the available evidence.

Get safe and obtain appropriate care

Call emergency services when needed. Do not refuse necessary care merely because you are worried about cost. If symptoms appear or worsen later, seek appropriate medical evaluation and accurately report when they began.

Preserve the scene

Photograph vehicle positions, damage, debris, roadway markings, traffic controls, weather, visible injuries, insurance cards, and driver information. Identify nearby businesses or homes that may have cameras.

Be accurate, not absolute

Cooperate with law enforcement, but avoid guessing about speed, distance, injuries, or fault. Adrenaline can mask symptoms, and a confident guess can later be treated as a prior inconsistent statement.

Organize the claim

Keep medical instructions, bills, work-loss records, photographs, receipts, claim numbers, and communications together. Notify your insurer as required, and consider obtaining advice before providing a broad recorded statement or medical authorization.

Every case turns on its own facts.

Deadlines, insurance, available parties, and proof can change the analysis. A website cannot determine whether you have a claim.
